With an AWS VPC, you get to set up your own private network segment within AWS. Your VPC network in AWS is very similar to a regular IP network. You choose your overall network ranges, setup route tables, subnets and connect everything together.
Access into and out of your VPC is something you should pay special attention to. Just like with a regular network, managing its security is paramount. In AWS, you have several options to connect to the outside world. You can connect directly to the Internet with an Internet Gateway, you can use a NAT Gateway to allow outbound only connections from your VPC to the Internet, and you can also use a VPN connection or direct fiber connection to your on-premise datacenter.
